How to see the Pope: Wednesday audience, Sunday Angelus and Mass

Seeing the Pope is easier than most people expect, and it costs nothing. Leo XIV, elected on 8 May 2025, has two regular public appearances a week when he is in Rome, both in the same square. The catch is the exceptions. There are whole weeks with no audience, and it’s worth knowing them before you book flights.

The Wednesday general audience

This is the longer of the two. Every Wednesday morning the Pope holds the general audience, and throughout 2026 it has taken place outdoors in St Peter’s Square. The most recent before this guide went live was on 23 September 2026, again in the square.

Timing is where most guides go wrong. The Holy See doesn’t publish an official start time. On 23 September the Pope arrived by jeep shortly before 10:00, according to the news agency of the Italian Bishops’ Conference. You’ll still see 9:00 quoted online, which was the habit under earlier popes. I’d set aside the whole morning and arrive early, because that same day there were queues at the security gates along Via del Mascherino, starting back at Piazza Risorgimento.

In winter the audience can move indoors to the Paul VI Audience Hall. None of the 2026 audiences has been held there so far, but between November and February it’s worth checking.

Free tickets, and how to request them

Tickets for the general audience are always free. They are handled by the Prefecture of the Papal Household, the Holy See office responsible for audiences, through its online events portal, where you request tickets for the General Audiences and Liturgical Celebrations of the Holy Father. You have to register before it will show you any instructions.

Collection is the part to treat with care. Several websites that copy the Prefecture’s form say paper tickets are picked up at the Bronze Door, at the end of the right-hand colonnade, on the Tuesday before from 15:00 to 19:00 or on the Wednesday itself from 7:30, and that nothing is sent by email. The old official pages that explained this no longer exist, so confirm the details in the reply you get when you apply. The Bronze Door is also one of the posts where you’ll see the Swiss Guard.

If anyone sells you a ticket for the audience, you’re paying for a service or a tour, never for admission.

Sunday Angelus at 12:00

This is the simplest way to see the Pope. On Sundays at 12:00 he prays the Angelus from the window of his study in the Apostolic Palace, overlooking the square, and the crowd joins in from below. There’s no ticket and no paperwork. Because he appears at a window, you’ll see him from a distance, so think of it as being part of the crowd rather than a close encounter.

If you have a Sunday free in Rome, my suggestion is to get there a little before 12:00 and pair it with a visit to St Peter’s Basilica next door.

Mass with the Pope

Masses celebrated by the Pope in the basilica or the square are also free, and tickets come through the same Prefecture portal. They follow the liturgical calendar rather than a weekly pattern. Two are announced for autumn 2026 in the schedule of celebrations released in August. On Thursday 8 October at 18:00 there’s a Mass in St Peter’s for the start of the academic year at the pontifical universities. On Wednesday 14 October at 10:00 there’s a Mass in the square marking ten years since the exhortation Amoris laetitia. As that falls on a Wednesday, check nearer the time how it affects the audience.

Summer at Castel Gandolfo

In July the Pope takes his holiday and audiences are suspended. In 2026 he stayed at Castel Gandolfo from Sunday 5 to Monday 27 July, and there were no general, private or special audiences during that time. They resumed on Wednesday 5 August and have run every Wednesday since, up to 23 September.

The Angelus carries on through the summer but changes venue. On 12, 19 and 26 July 2026 the Pope led it in Piazza della Libertà at Castel Gandolfo. If you’re in Rome in July and want to see him, that’s the way to do it.

Outside the summer, press reports say the Pope spends most weeks at Castel Gandolfo from Monday evening to Tuesday evening. That doesn’t touch the public appearances, which are on Wednesdays and Sundays.

Leo XIV’s travel for the rest of 2026

The other big exception is travel, and it’s worth separating what is confirmed from what is inference. The Holy See lists two upcoming trips. From 25 to 28 September 2026 the Pope is in France, including a visit to UNESCO headquarters, so he won’t be in the square on Sunday 27th. From 6 to 17 November 2026 he travels to Uruguay, Argentina and Peru, a period that takes in Wednesday 11th and Sundays 8th and 15th.

What doesn’t exist yet is an official audience calendar for October to December. It makes sense that there will be no audience or Angelus in the square while he’s away, but that is my reading, not an announcement.
